I read your last post after it had been locked. So, I thought I'd start a new one to maybe help answer your question.

The neighbor wanting to sell you an 8mm semi-auto has either one of two. The FN-49 or the Hakim. The FN-49 is Belgian made by Fabrique-National (Nacional?, can't remember the spelling) This is the forerunner to the FN-FAL of worldwide fame. It's an outstanding rifle!

The other is the Egyptian Hakim, built in Yugoslavia for the Egyptians. This too is a good rifle, but more picky on ammunition.

Both provide standard battlefield accuracy from a serviceable rifle. And with the right ammo both have pretty high reliability marks.

Someone may come along with a different story of one or the other, but that's what I've seen.

    The Hakim was made in Egypt on Swedish machinery. The Swedes originally made a similar rifle during W W II call a Ljungman, it was chambered in 6.5 Swede. After W W II they sold the machinery & tooling to Egypt and help them set it up, to produce what Egypt called the Hakim which in reality was a Ljungmen chambered for the 8mm Mauser cartridge.

    sandwarrior, the Egyptian Hakim was built in Egypt on the Swede tooling for the 6.5x55 Ljungman. The Egyptians had piles of 8mm surplus ammo, so they had the rifle slightly re-designed and chambered for it.
    It's long, it's heavy, it's accurate, and it's fun to shoot. Surplus 25rnd MG-13 magazines, with a little fitting work great in them too. Adjustable gas system for the variety of loads. Weight and muzzle brake leave very little recoil.
    Downside:
    Parts are about non existent, Turk surplus ammo is too hot to use, new hammer spring may be needed to pop Yugo surplus primers, blast from the muzzle brake won't make you any new friends at the range....until you let them shoot it.[:)]

    I had one of the original 6.5 Swede, Ljungmen's years ago. It's a wonderful piece of machinery but it had the ergonomics of a 4 X 4, unfortunately. The Swedes who they were made for must have all been 6'2" or better, with wingspans like a basketball player. Definitely not made for a 5'8" fat boy like me.

    Sounds like I owe a HUGE apology. Thinking off the top of my head the wires got crossed and I gave bad information. My sincere apologies!!

    Anyhow, rufe, I understand what you mean. 5'8" and just keeping it under 300 myself. Edit: Let's just say 'crow' might be doing me some good on my menu because it's lean....but I still don't like to eat it.[:D]

    I still think it's a good rifle.

    Didnt see the thread but there is also the Yugo M76. a long barreled AK chambered in 8mm, originally designed as a sharp shooters rifle.

    Its not made in egypt, but if anyone uses the seach feature to find semi auto 8mms, this may be useful..

    either8mm is a lot of gun for home defense. If it is a FN-49 it would work without any problems.

    if its a hakim, i'd do some research on it first. as trap says it was meant to fire ammo with a certian spec powder/pressure. Overdoing it can lead to catistrophic malfunction.

    Thats pretty ingenious, with the MG-13 mags, makes me want a hakim.[:D]
