I need a Iver Johnson Model 55 .38 special cylinder shortend a little, 1/8" to fit in frame. . I guess I need lathe work?. Thanks

  Yes, and get that dimension close.
  Try to have your cylinder turned on centers rather than in a chuck.
  I have found some cylinder faces not running perpendicular to the axes of the cylinders but running perpendicular to the outside diameter of the cylinders.
