help please-Colt 1911 DOM

The guns serial number is #491741. I bought this a couple of years ago from a guy that inherited a house and he found this in it hidden away. The gun is in pretty rough shape, where it say "United States Property" it is scratched off and where it says "Model of 1911" The 1911 is scratched off. Any idea of what it will bring on an auction, I am gonna penny start no reserve auction it after I get a date nailed down.

    1918, In the condition it's in $250-$300?, to the proverbial right person. Might be a hard sell the way things are now for a lot of folks. The only thing going for it is that it's a original W W I 1911.

    Hello Most likely brought back by a G.I. and he was afraid of getting caught with it. Now it really is no way to prove it is illegal to own or sell. as long as FFL rules are followed. It would be worth more even though it is is rough condition IF IT HAD NOT BEEN DEFACED by trying to remove United States Property. All military owned 1911 during the time this one was made would have a serial number with numbers only. A gun sold on the civilian market by COLT would have had a letter C in front of the serial numbers. So with the letters removed it could still be proven it was military U.S. Property. Please post back here when you put up for auction. The Good thing is HE DID NOT try to remove serial number if this had been done then having it in your possession would get you jail time.

    EDIT I to find it almost comical a that someone would Think that scratching of the U.S. Property would make anything "CLEAN" but then thieves for the most part are not the sharpest knives in the rack. I have a First contract SAA Ainsworth Proofed all matching That had the US filed off BEFORE 1889 when it was taken off a DESERTER/payroll robber. I guess there were not so bright people even then. ssa3.jpg

    EDIT 2 Hello Hawk I think the meaning was no 1911 pistols as this is a 1918 model not all 1911 and 1911A1 type pistols as the ones used now are 1911A1 types. . I missed this the first time also. [:I]

    Perry shooter, Thanks for the response, I am a dealer so I knew that about the serial number but what I find funny is that I have seen several of them that have been defaced accross the "US property", did people really think back then that by scratching the us property part off would fool anybody[:)] Like I could see a couple of Military "re-procurement" people standing around examining this pistol with the big scratches over the "us property" thinking, huh, i guess this isnt one of the pistols we are looking for.[:D]

    I know they never sent anyone around or anything but I just find it funny that people thought they sere safe if they scratched that part off.

    No US M1911 type pistols are in government inventory today. (except display examples).

    Uncle Sam has zero interest in who has such type property in their posession. They want nothing more to do with it. Best, Joe

    This would be news to the USMC with their MEU-SOC customized 1911s.

    Well, he says 1911 TYPE which I took to include 1911A1.
