remington milspec 5r
I was talking to a large gun dealer telling him I would like a 300 win mag mil spec 5r. He said those are not available to non military and that Remington hasen't made a gun with a M24 barrel in the last 5 years. He asked me if I wanted one because I saw it on a video game! He thinks I am nuts and said good looking finding one and having it sent to them as a ffl handler. Can anyone help me out, I see them right here on this site, is he just a bad employee or is it normal for him to have no idea what is going on with this rifle. Also I was wondering if it comes in any up graded models, bump out stocks or any other upgrades besides optics? Thanks for your help!

First off I don't know what you meam when you say they haven't made one with a M24 barrel for the last 5 years.... I take it you mean a 5R barrel? This dealer is dead wrong and you should be careful trusting him as he doesn't know what he is talking about. The shop I go to has had 5 or 6 of the "Remington 700 SS 5R barrel" rifle in .308 in his shop and sold every on like 2 days after it arrives. Yes, all his sales have been in .308 but the .300 has been available. Now he has just received a VTR with the 5R barrel but it will only be in .308 and a few others calibers (no .300)- A very nice rifle. 0 -

Pretty sure the M24 barrel is made of 416SS starts at 1.20 and tappers to .920 at muzzle. I believe it also has a dove tail machined into it for an iron sight.0 -

Boots Obermeyer originally produced this rifling form in his barrels used by the military. Others wanted what the military had so Boots started producing more barrels. Boots has unselfishly allowed several other barrel makers and Remington to used this style of rifling. So the availability of 5R rifling is at an all time high for the general public. Bartlein Barrels is producing thousands of these a year and is backlogged most of one year right now. If 5R isn't your cup of tea, Tim North of Broughton Barrels produces a style named '5C or Canted Lands' and Shilen produces the 'Ratchet Rifling'.
Back when all this hubbub started about 5R rifling, Remington was using the overrun barrels on rifles to sell to the general public. The quantities were limited and a feeding frenzy occurred. Now Remington has their own hammer forging mandrels for this style of rifling and is producing several models with these barrels.
I suggest reading Remington's website to avail yourself of the information provided there with regard to the rifling used in various barrels and models.

Thank you for your thorough reply and information! However, the reason I asked if he was a good employee happens to be very relevant. I am a very conscientious consumer and I do not go buy products from people who have no idea what they are doing. I contacted them because I am looking for a shop that I will deal with on a regular basis, i.e. using as a ffl handler, when I finally purchase an online gun, buying accessories, and repairs. I did further research into that particular shop and heard horror stories from trusted sources on that business. I can't imagine who wouldn't care! This not really important in the grand scheme of things put thought I would throw my two cents in.

Ref: the post above..You may wish to continue to use the services of the gunshop, now that you know you have a direct line to us to answer your questions in a timely, correct fashion.
Just don't rely on the gunshop for advice, do as you have done, and come here. I, for one, also don't care what the gunshop counterman said..for the reasons cited in the paragraph above. Best, and Welcome Aboard! Joe0 -
I don't even ask questions in gun shops anymore. More often than not, the clerk hasn't a clue what they are talking about. They are generally motivated only by sales, rather than a desire to give out good information.
I've heard some pretty ridiculous things from gun shop clerks. More than once I've been told that Remington LE products are only available to LE agencies...0 -

Just to clear some of the perceived ignorance up, I had a local gunshop owner call Remington directly while I stood there and they told him they did not sell 700 LTR's to civilians. For those that don't know, the LTR took the place of the P series and are used as sniper rifles by SWAT and other LE agencies. He could not order one for me. I did find an excellent seller here on GB though. Just 2 more pennies for you... 0 -
