Ithaca 37 needs repair
I was recently left a Ithaca 37 featherlight 12ga. Early sixty's model. I think the shell holder on the right side may be broken off at the tip. can someone post a photo of this model with the holders in place. Is this a common problem with this model? The gun feeds into the chamber and fires, but the magazine tube will not hold any shells. HELP! Thanks.

There are two shell stops on a 37. Flip the gun upside down and look at the ejection port. The primary shell stop is now on your right--it's the stop that holds the last shell in the magazine. My guess is that it is either missing, broken or (more than likely) has a missing spring or maybe just locked up with crud. The shell stop that is now on your left (the guns right) is the secondary shell stop; the one that prevents the rest of the shells from following the first one out of the magazine. It does, in fact, look like it has a broken tip and is supposed to look that way. Try this experiment: Take an empty shell and push it into the magazine a half inch or so further than necessary--hold it there with your finger while you open the action. Now, with the action open, release your finger pressure on the shell. If I'm right, the shell will stay in there. When you close the action, the shell will fly out since the primary shell stop can't catch it. If it works as I just described, your primary shell stop needs attention. One of the nice features of the 37 is that it's easy to safely unload the magazine by flipping the gun over, pushing aside the primary shell stop with the tip of your right thumb and easing the shells out one at a time. 0 -
FIXED! Took the shell stop out. Stuck in years of gunk, I found one led shot behind the stop on the butt side of the pin that the stop pivots on! Cleaned and lubed, it's ready to rock. Thanks for your help Ambrose. 0 -
Glad I was of some help. A 12 ga. 37 was my first "real" shotgun, bought in 1952. I own several of them now. I guess my favorite is a pre-war 16 ga. 0 -
Always wanted one and have a 1965 Deluxe 12 gage.
It was brand new 10 years ago when I bought it because it was a jammer
and the owner set it aside. It's fixed now and couldn't be slicker.
Now I need a 20 gage Deluxe because my joints are giving in to old injuries.0 -
v35: For your 20 ga., see if you can find an "Ultralite". I bought an English Ultralite a few years ago (the one with a straight grip serraited no butt plate stock) and it weighs practically nothin'. It's a really quick gun but you'll want to stick with 7/8 ounce field loads.
Auction #167148048 looks like a nice Ultralite--not the English one, though.0
