remington 550-1 question ???

Having a brain fart ! customer brings in a remington 550-1 .22 cal rifle , will only 'cock and fire ' if held "upsidedown" ??? , I know I'm missing something ? but its been one of those days ?????
any suggestions ?

drink enough coffee and start over and we can find the problem !!!
seems like the customer had lost a few parts (sear spring , ect.) ?
