Winchester 1894 Carbine ?

Out of state looking at some guns for a guy and don't have my reference material. Gun is an 1894 carbine, round barrel 32-40, 20" barrel. Serial # 3789XX. Gun rates about 50% condition. The LOP from the trigger to the closest point on the butt plate is 12" The guy was told by a local store the stock was cut and you can see what appears to be small saw chips in the wood from a long time ago. He was also told that this was a common alteration by guns bought by the Texas Rangers and the Pinkertons and that it may be very valuable. Obviously contacting Cody for a letter is the most definitive but again I am out of state. Thoughts please, and am not in a position presently to take photos but maybe I can get some in a couple of days.

    Buy the gun...never the story. Maybe he'd like to buy my Luger that was owned by "Billy the Kid".

    A cut stock is a deduction, not a premium. That's the same kind of guy who tries to sell a rusty, cut-down, bored-out Civil War Springfield as "Confederate".

    Also, the rifle will not letter from Cody, serial number is a little late.

    The story is just that... a "story", and as Spider stated, never buy the story.

    The serial number puts the DOM in November of 1907, and as such, it should have a saddle ring on the left side of the receiver.

    The cut down stock is a major deduction, and unless the rest of the gun is better than average, I would walk away from it unless it is priced less than $700.
