Colt 1911 or 1991
Getting ready to purchase a Colt Govt. Model.45. What is or is there any difference between the 1911 and the 1991[?]

The 1991 is just a less expencive 1911A1 model. They are just not finished as good and have some plastic parts. 0 -

there is a distinct difference between the 1991A1 and the 1911A1. the 1991A1 is a series 80 pistol, meaning that there is a plunger and plunger spring manufactured inside of the slide. if im correct, its intended purpose is to keep the firing pin in place so as not to allow accidental discharge of a round while carried in the "cocked and locked" position and is a great ccw pistol for that reason alone. to my knowledge, the 1911A1's were not manufactured with a plunger and spring inside the slide which is the reason the U.S. military's trained our soldiers to never carry a round in the chamber so as to avoid accidental discharges. hope this shed some light on the subject. best-GARTH 0 -
Below is a link to a U-toob video explaining (much better than I) why I will never own a series 80 Colt. Both the 'Series 80', and the 1991 series pistols use the same firing pin block, and as you can see from the video, can lead to very serious problems, indeed. Enjoy the video! Best, Joe

pirate2501..thanks for the question. I have both pistols so I will give you my impressions. There are several significant differences between the two, mainly cosmetic and some internal that others have commented on. But when you see and hold a 1911 and then the 1991, the difference is striking. I am partial to 1911's and have a couple and I have one 1991. All my 1911's are made like Rolls Royces...very expensive looking and quality in spades. Grade...A. 1991...cheaper looking and more plastic. Grade....B-. So, do you want a Caddy or a Chevy? Nothing wrong with the Chevy (1991) but it is never going to appreciate. Take care of the Caddy (1911, preferably pre-1970) and it will go up in value. Just my HO. Good luck! 0 -
OK, somethings have to be said about metal mainspring housings vs plastic. Metal last longer. Plastic weighs less and particulates seem to move around a strut plunger better because plastic is more flexible to reduce the chance of a granule/particulate to seize the function. That's another reason for plastic recoil guide rods. Plastic also will not rust seizing the function. Like preventative maintenance. I like metal on a range gun & plastic on a duty gun because my life may be saved by a plastic part. Aluminum seems to have a surface stickiness when some compression is applied (it's better to have anodized)and contaminates are a nightmare. Plastics seem to like to shrink and often crack in time as they age unlike metal. If it looks bad when the spring goes change them both. Sometimes mainspring pins like to shoot loose out of metal when its poorly machined, it's happened to me before. So much I prefer grips without the pin cut out. The mainspring pin just walked out of one frame tang and the mainspring housing's tension held the pin from fully walking out against the other tang pin hole when shooting. Plastics seem to like to stick with tight tolerances so I feel it isn't right to use for a push trigger. Ever attempt to unscrew two plastic threads on PVC pipe? Well any ways it's your happiness so go with ever you like but plastic is standard on lots of 1911s as well as 1991s. 0 -

In a nutshell, the 1991 has the series 80-style trigger safety and some plastic parts.
Particularly if you're interested in an actual Colt gun as a "shooter", I'd suggest buying a older series 70 gun. This is probably about as good as you're going to get in a stock 1911, and it will only continue to appreciate in value with time.0
