Colt SAA....

I inherited this from my grandfather. I don't even know if its a Colt or what generation it is. The serial #249XXX

    It's a "1st Generation" Colt Single Action Army made in 1903. It should have markings on the top of the barrel. The caliber markings are worn off the side of the barrel so I can't tell what caliber it is.

    Evidence of barrel removal (grip marks of being placed in a vice mid-point on barrel, both sides and non std. sight).
    Barrel swap either done prior to re-nickel, or nickel barrel installed many years ago. You can see a vice 'slip' scar on the left side of the barrel.

    That may explain the absence of caliber stamp. Non-Colt barrel. What's stamped on top of the barrel?

    I noticed the marks on the barrel also. There is nothing on the barrel at all. What would you guys do if you owned this gun. Should I find a colt barrel for it then have it refinihed. I know the value is lost because of the barrel change.

    If it were mine,handed down to me,it'd keep it as is,and cherish it always.

    oh,and shoot it if a gunsmith said 'ok'. I don't have safe queens,never will.

    Irrespective of the transverse cylinder pin latch which came out on the SAA in 1892, Colt first guaranteed their SAAs against smokeless powder in 1900 at s/n 192,000.
    The barrel is obviously old and if not Colt marked and not .45 it's possible to have been a rebarrel job using a piece of Winchester or Marlin rifle barrel in 38-40 or 44-40.
    In 1898, Colt advised against the use of smokeless in their SAAs.
    The transverse latch first came out in their Lightning and Thunder models of 1877.
