9mm sub-compact pt2 ???

in the earlier thread fastcarsgofast stated that it be best to aviod the taurus sub compact 9mm , my question is why? what the general thoughts on the taurus and ruger sub compacts in 380, 9mm ? thanks in advance to all who reply.

    most likely because a lot of folks either personally had bad experiences or friends of theirs did with Taurus firearms-many feel they are bottom of the barrel guns. I have had little experience with Taurus autos but no bad issues--and no issues out of the various Taurus revolvers I've owned. As to the Ruger LCP I have one and carry it-good little carry gun-have not shot the Ruger SR9c.

    Taurus guns have a checkered reputation when it comes to reliability and quality control. Lots of people are afraid to trust their lives to them for this reason.

    I can't comment on the new subcompact 9mm since I've never tried it.

    Ruger 380 is effectively a clone of the Kel-Tec 3AT, just with a slightly more ergonomic grip and (IIRC) a slide lock.

    Biggest advantages of this is that its extremely small and light and not too expensive.

    Disadvantages (which it shares with the Kel Tec) is that sights aren't that easy to see, and reliability can be spotty. Note that pretty much **NONE** of the micro-.380s are known for great reliability.

    I agree 100%.

    My impression is that the original full sized Taurus PT92 (which is a Beretta clone originally built on actual Beretta machinery) is a good gun. Their revolvers were originally knock offs of Smith revolvers, and have historically had quality control problems, with some guns being fine, and others being shipped off the assembly line with just inexcusable problems with fitting, timing, etc.

    Taurus took pains to clean up its act in the mid-90s by improving both its quality control and customer service, but seems over the past several years to have started slacking off again in both areas.

    While I've shot a number of them over the years, I've never actually owned a Taurus gun, and generally tend to avoid them. Its not necessarily that their guns are bad; they do put out plenty of good ones, and in fairness probably most of their guns are OK.

    Its just that with revolvers, there are so many excellent used Smith revolvers out there, I don't see the point of going with a Taurus. In terms of autos, I'm just not familiar with any guns where Taurus has really distinguished itself, and with SO many other auto with excellent reputations out there, I don't feel like I need to take a chance.

    In my personal experience they make sub-par pistols from sub-quality materials that are poorly designed. Their customer service is also sub-par. Their reps are ill-mannered and rude. They do not want to stand behind their warranty they would not let me order parts to make the repair myself. They flat out refused to sell me the part because they claimed it had to installed by them to keep from voiding the warranty that they would not honor anyway. When I asked to speak to a supervisor I was told flat out "no" and when I asked for an email address to write to they told me to get the postal address from their website and that they did not accept emails from customers.

    Here is what I noticed of Taurus in the last 15 years. They started out as a manufacturer that was building ok guns for much cheaper than the competition. They didn't have the greatest reputation, but people bought them because they were cheaper. I think they went through a period where they really improved their quality and they earned a very good name for themselves. Unfortunately I think they have become more relaxed in their QC in the last few years. I've had three Taurus revolvers and one pistol in the last 5 years. Two of the revolvers needed to go back to the factory for warranty work before they were even taken out of the box. This tells me that they have no one checking each gun as it goes out of the factory. They are perhaps checking every other or every third gun instead. The two I needed to send back, both were brand new and hand cylinders that would lock up on one particular chamber. I hope they get their act together and get back on track.
