I asked the other day about the 6.8 on a AR platform. I have considered all the posts and deceided to go to a 308. cal. I live in the boondocks and want something precision at 500 yds. The two best I can come up are a AR-10 or win model 70 coyote lite. I like the new camo Remington version of the AR. Are there any other rifle considerations in a 308? Any thoughts? By the way, in WWII the garand was the standard with the 06 cal. Why did we get away from it. I always thought it as a real mans gun.

On your Garand comment, my guess is the rifles capacity limitations, the M-14 brought in the detachable magazine and higher magazine capacity
On your 308 question I would look at the PTR-91(H&K 91 clone) or FN FAL too...I'd like to get a PTR-91 when I can scarp together the cash0 -

As far as the Garand goes, the 30-06 is overpowered for combat and way too heavy. But, so is the .308/7.62x51. As shilowar stated it also had capacity limitations. That's why we went to the M-14 and the .308/7.62. The M-14 is pretty much an improved M1 with the box magazine and full auto capability. In it's original configuration it was very heavy. With today's materials the rifle can be made much lighter. But, they are also very spendy.
Every maker just about, makes a quality long range version of the .308. The Remington R-25 you talk about is the Remington version of the AR-10. Nothing unusual about that. But, if you want precision fire at 500 yds. then you need to get the variant that is expressly built for accuracy. They cost a little more. Same with the M1A(M14) Anytime you get a semi-auto accurized the price goes up exponentially. Another option is an FN-AR. Those are semi-auto 10 rd. in .308 and are very accurate. Definitely MOA or better.
Also, I don't know how the Winchester 70 coyote lite became your top pick for accuracy out of a bolt action. If it's the best price around you, then I'd say it would certainly do the job @ 500. But, I sure wouldn't say it's the best rifle for the money. Savage pretty much has that nailed down right now for out of the box accuracy. Look at the model 10FP/12FV or 12BVSS/12FVSS You could even look at the BAS series with the pistol grip/folding stocks. Remington SPS are cost effective but shoot well. CZ makes a great varmint rifle in .308 as does Tikka.
FWIW, comparing an AR-10 to a bolt rifle isn't really apples to apples. I'd say you need to decide what kind of shooting you do. Is it going to be volume? Then I'd go with a semi-auto. You can certainly expect to pay a lot more. If it's all out accuracy you want I would look more to the bolt rifles. Also, the .308 is an excellent rifle within 600 yds. But, if you wanted to stretch out farther then I would look at something with more ballistic efficiency, such as the 243, .260 or 7mm-08.0
