SKS magazines

I have a Norinco SKS that came with 1 USA Brand mag and I was wondering if anyone knew of any aftermarket mags that would fit my SKS. I have bought a few and none of them fit. I replaced the wood stock with a polymer folding one and the aftermarket mags still don't fit. I am thinking about trying a TAPCO mag but I am not sure, plus I'm tired of buying mags that don't fit. Any and all help and advice is greatly appreciated.

    Can an SKS with a fixed mag be adapted to take detachable magazines? And if so, how difficult a job is it? Where would a fella get the hardware.

    It is not that difficult a project how ever the problem that lies is that no one makes a magazine as reliable as the one that came in the gun to begin with. The detachable mags are to unreliable. If you want more fire power look for a 20 round Chinese non detachable mag.
    These are are good as the one it came with.

    Armilite has it Colonel. I fooled aroumd with those for a couple of years and only had one mag that was good. Went back to origonal mag and stripper clips. Just as fast and no constant problems.

    No real tricks to convert though. Just remove factory mag ( is just take one pin out IIRC) and you can insert removable mag. save the money and buy stripper clips.

    It is very simple-but as others have said rarely do the hi caps work-same like on the Ruger Mini 14's. I had a SKS and worked perfect with the 10 round fixed but not at all with the 20 rounder.

    It's not hard. Disassemble the rifle following directions that came with the rifle or obtained on the internet. Then reassemble without the fixed magazine. The SKS detachable mags available at gun shows, gun shops, and on the internet have a duckbill shaped front piece that is inserted first, then the rear portion rocks into place and locks. Personally, I have had few of these to work reliably and prefer the 10 round fixed magazine. With stripper clips you can reload almost as fast as changing magazines. Another good option is to buy a replacement fixed 20 round magazine and load it with stripper clips as well. Though few seem to be aware of it, Federal law 922r is still on the books and accordingly you must remove the bayonet and bayonet lug prior to installing a detachable magazine. You also must not use a pistol grip stock or folding stock when using detachable mags on an SKS.

    Colonel Plink If your just looking for that AK look Tapco makes a 10 round Non detachable replacement magazine available from Midway for $21. I have one on order that I plan to play with. It looks like the 20 round non detachable but only holds 10 rounds.

    I can only go off my own experience, but I have had no trouble with the metal 30rnd mags in my SKS. I took off the 10rd the first day, I think it was just one screw.

    I honestly don't remember the brand of mags, I bought them with the SKS 15 years ago, but the metal ones on CDNN look like what I have.

    I must have the only one on Earth that runs at an acceptable rate with 30rd mags. A Norinco SKS with 2 30rd mags loaded with 30rds of Wolf will usually give me 1 stove pipe in 90 rds. As far as the mags go, they came with the rifle from the fun show many moons ago. I see no ID markings on the mags what so ever.

    lemmie se If I recall correctly you,

    1) open the mag, leave it that way

    2)take off the top cover and remove the bolt and returnrod/spring. You doan gotta remove the piston rods.

    3)put the gun on safe. turn the gun upside down with the trigger guard pointing up at the ceiling. Push the little dimpled button behind the trigger guard in with a bullet tip or punch. when its fully depressed the gun should come apart, by gravity alone usually.

    4)remove the intgral box magazine, and put the gun back together but holding the action in the stock and pushing/squeezing the trigger group back into place with the same hand, that part can be alittle tricky, but its not that hard to do. Just alittle agrovating the first couple of times.
