Reloading .43 Spanish?
Hi,
I just bought an old Remington rolling block in .43 Spanish (not the reformado) Also bought some brass and would like to reload it. I know it's basically a blackpowder rifle but I would like to shoot some smokeless. Does anyone have a load that would work?

A friend had one of those as well as a .43 Egyptian and a .43 Mauser. We played with them quite a bit on my 100 yd. range in the 90's. According to my notes, one of the good loads we used was a 395 cast lead bullet over 28 gr. of SR4759 for 1362 fps. Basically, you can use Springfield trap door .45/70 load data. Those old guns are fun! You hear the "thump" as the gun goes off and then, seems like quite a while later, you hear the "plop" as the bullet hits the target. 0 -
Owner of a 43 Spanish Remington RB since the late 1960s. I'd recommend you try using IMR Trail Boss powder with your cast bullets.
The Trail Boss powder is not case sensitive and due to shape/bulk of the powder, fills a case nicely, so no filler needed. Trail Boss burns pretty clean. Also, another big advantage of Trail Boss is you can fill case to bottom of where you seat a bullet and not be concerned with having a load beyond maximum pressure rifle designed to handle. IMR/Hodgdon has written it is impossible to get enough Trail Boss into ANY cartridge, with a proper bullet for said cartridge, that can produce an over pressure problem.
Been awhile since I used Trail Boss in my 43 Spanish and then I used 13 grains with a 370gr cast bullet. Very mild recoil and a hoot to shoot. However, since then IMR has advertised the impossible to overload property of Trail Boss and I intend to increase my Trail Boss charge next time I reload 43 Spanish ammo. I'll probably put enought Trail Boss into my brass to reach 70% load density. If you fill a case to bottom of a seated bullet you have reached 100% load density. Let's pretend it takes 28 grains of Trail Boss for 100% load density. If I multiply the 28 grains times .70, I'll find the 70% load density. So, I'd charge a case with 19.6 grains of Trail Boss for a 70% load density. Like I said, these figures are pretend, I've not measured the correct 100% load density yet to determine what is 70% load density.0 -

i used wc 872 powder to load the 43 spanish just filled it to the top an pressed any projectile in it worked fine this slow burn powder works well with all other type old big cals like the 43 spanish i called the acc arms powder co in tennesse yrs back an talked to there ballistic man named ted some of the acc arms powder co book loads showed the 8700 as a powder you could use on a lot of cals they all were compressed loads 0
