The AR15 in 6x45mm revisited

The subject came up 2 days ago on getting more power out of the AR15.
I suggested the once popular 6x45 wildcat that gives it another 200 ft lbs in the same case with neck expanded to 6mm.
Coincidentally, yesterday in the the Shooting Times,Les Baer advertized it will be making a rifle in that "New" cartridge and Black Hills will be commercially loading it.
It's not a 6.5 Grendel or 6.8 but takes no other changes than the barrel.
They're also offering a proprietary 6.5mm called .264LBC-AR.

    If you read the Shotgun News High Standard has been making the 6x45 for a while now. They have been running adds for at least the last 6 months.

    Shotgun news also had a feature on economy priced 6x45 uppers this month in thier expanded color catalog..

    Corbon also offers load(s) for the chambering.

    I think this round is a top performer but is not attracting much interest. I recently scored 500 of the discontinued Sierra 80 SSP 6mm bullets designed for handgun hunting at a velocity achieveable from the 6x45mm. An AR upper is on the wish list.

    I would have to say that if you stayed in the realm of bullets that can run through a magazine with this it's a definite improvement over the .223/5.56. Worth going to IMO if that's all you used it for. I have to apologize for my last post on the other thread as maybe I made it sound like it wasn't much of a good choice. This combination will easily launch bullets, fed from a magazine, that will reach 500-600 yds effectively.

    FWIW, I was looking strongly at getting one of these. I himmed and hawed on the 6mm AR/Turbo and another 6.5 sporter as well. But, the next AR project got put on backburner for a while.

    I had a very early 6x45 and the 6.8 is a better improvement than the 6x45 over the .223. The problem lies in the fact that any bullet over 87 grains just destroyes the case capacity and kills velocities. This eliminates a lot of the bullets in 6mm in the 100 grain range. It will shoot them but not at the velocities the 6mm bullet was designed for. Hell I shot the old Speer 70 grain .223"s in a Colt 1 in 12 twist barrel with good success. The 87 grain Hornady bullet which is a very good bullet in 6mm. is only 17 grains heavier than the old Speer. Not enough of a difference for me to make it worth while.
