AR15 Pistol
AR15 pistols are legal. You see them all the time on GunBroker. Is it true however, that it is illegal to take an AR15 lower that has been ser. numbered as a rifle, taking off the butt stock and replacing it with a pistol style recoil spring housing, and put an upper on it that has a barrel shorter than 16"?

I saw an upper receiver for an AR15 with an 8 inch barrel and am considering purchasing it. I was wondering if this barrel length is legal. Also, what sort of range does anyone think the 223 would have with an 8 inch barrel. And also, every other AR based pistol i have seen, only 3, have been modified to either pump or bolt action. why is this?-a preference or is it for some reason i am not aware. I can not think of a reason why it couldnt be left semi auto.thanks for any help. 0 -
It is a fact that you cannot take a receiver that has been a rifle and turn it into a pistol, you have to start teh project with a bare receiver that has never had a butt stock fitted. If you buy a virgin receiver to start the build it would be helpful if your transferring dealer would mark the paperwork as "other" when the question about pistol, rifle, other comes up. I had no problem when my transferring dealer about 4 years ago refused and marked all my AR receivers as "rifle". I wasn't going to make one of those ugly pistols anyway! A couple of years ago I bought a number of AK receivers and asked him about this. I knew I was going to produce at least one pistol. He refused but I got a letter of clarification from the ATF plus a letter from the mfgr (w/ my serial numbers) saying that these were new receivers and never been a part of any weapon. Just keep all your papers filed away. 0 -
