Custom 1878 Borchardt Sharps Rifle

I recently inherited a custom 1878 Borchardt Sharps rifle from a relative (who was in his 80s). I have no information about where he acquired the rifle but I believe it was his father's. It is custom barreled in 219 Wasp. The barrel is inscribed E Lathum 219 Wasp. The receiver is engraved on the left side "Borchardt Patent/Sharps Rifle Co., Bridgeport, Conn/U.S.A. The receiver has a serial number on the underside in the 7,000's. The stock is fancy walnut and I believe it may have been the original one made for the rifle. A unertl scope is mounted to the rifle. I was wondering if anyone might have some info on this fine old rifle and face an idea of it's worth.[img][/img][img][/img]

    Your rifle was built on a Sharps Borchardt receiver but I believe it was restocked and rebarreled. The buttstock may have been a reworked original but the oversized forestock definitely does not appear to be a Borchardt style. It also looks to have plastic caps and spacers which were not available in the 1870's.

    This is a custom made varminter probably in the '50s with a Unertl scope.
    These Sharps' were great varmint guns today as when they were converted from their obsolete, unavailable calibers.
    At the time of conversion these rifles in their original configurations
    had little value.
    Unfortunately, a Sharps collector today would be mortified that such a collectible was defiled by disposing of the original stocks, changing original caliber and altering the lever. As such it would have no collector's value as an antique.
    However, to a varminter or target shooter, that beautiful conversion should have good value. There would be your market.
