It's known to collectors as a "Lemon Squeezer". S & W sold it as their Safety Model, it appears to be the 4th variation, made between 1898 & 1907, with over 100,000 made. Many were used by businesses to arm their security personnel. That's what the markings on yours appear to be. 0 -
For 50 USD you can get it lettered by S&W. It might have been part of an order that a company placed. 0 -
TravisT,
Mr. Snow is correct in identifying your S&W as a "38 Safety Hammerless 4th Model". It was a 'named' rather than a 'numbered' model (built before 1957)
Prior to the '50's & modern transport going to air or trucking, our countrie's goods moved mainly by railway express. I'm old enough to remember going to the rail station's express office to recieve packages that were too large for the post office.
Your gun appears to have been in service by such an express company.
I would reccomend contacting Smith & Wesson for a history letter to authenticate the stamping. If the factory letter indicates your gun was originally shipped to such an express company, that along with the high grade of finish will add to it's collector value.

Thank you all for the information, you are all great in helping.....thanks, Travis 0 -
I'm curious as to why you said the serial number is 200XXX when it's clearly 200929? 0 -
When I started typing the number I forgot what the serial number was and forgot to look at the pics..... 0 -

Gotcha. Again, I was just curious. Thanks!0 -
As Cool Hand Luke said we have a breakdown in communication here. 200929 is not the Smith's serial number. It's the property/inventory? number put on it by the express company. The authentic S & W serial number is the number on the butt. 0 -
The same number 200929 is on the butt, side of gun and also on the cylinder.... 0 -
