FNM 8x57
Would anybody have any information on this ammo?
So far all I have determined is that it is 196gr, non-corrosive and reloadable brass. I don't recall where it was manufactured. Portugal maybe?
I'm having an issue with my FN 49. With the gas sleeve cranked all the way open it is ejecting the spent cases a good 5-6 feet. It shouldn't even extract with the gas sleeve/port that far open.
And yes, my gas system is clean and not corroded. The port in the gas cylinder is clear.
I haven't tried any factory Rem/Win ammo in it yet. That stuff is nearly as much for 20 as what I've paid for 90 rounds.

Can't help you with your rifle, but yeah, FNM ammo is Portugese.
Based on the stamp, yours looks like it was loaded in 1972.
Bala normal = "ordinary ball".
Yes, its non-corrosive, though supposedly hot-loaded and one of the most accurate surplus-type 8mms out there.
I don't know if its Boxer or Berdan primed, but if you say its Boxer (reloadable), then it is.0 -
I kinda wondered if it had a reputation for being hot. Guess I'll have to break down and buy a box of Remington and see how it functions with those.
It's definitely boxer as I only see one flash hole in the case that I fired. Now if I can only find more of it.

Remington may be too far in the other direction. USA commercial 8x57 is loaded extra light in case it finds its way into an early 8mm which has the tighter .318 bore. 0 -

The only ammo I think is hotter than Portuguese 8mm is Turk 8mm. But by the way it sounds it's ejecting about right with the gas system all the way open. How is it for accuracy? Speaking of that have you tried any of the '80's made M75 Yugo? It's relatively slow, but I found it very accurate out of my sons Rem 700 classic and my M48BO (scoped). The Brass Rumanian is kind of mixed as to how well it goes bang. Very accurate when it does though. A lot of people have found the primers seated very deep. You might try Prvi Partizan. It's hot enough to make your rifle work well. The new brass is boxer primed and reloadable. You can find it at www.grafs.com
As far as Rem, Win and Federal, I would have to caution not to waste your time unless you want the brass. You can also find brass at www.gunstop.com0 -
The CIA parts 49 I had about 12-13 years ago shot really well with Remington and Winchester ammo. Just had to close down the gas sleeve to about 1/3 open.
So far Sandwarrior, I've only had the one round through her. It actually took me by surprise when it ejected with the vent port fully open. As I recall 6 to 7 feet is ideal, but I prefer to keep it down around 5 feet. I don't notice the additional recoil, and it's less punishment on the rifle. So long as it doesn't FTE or FTF.
I've been considering either the Prvi Partizan or, if they even make it, some Fiocchi. I've shot Fiocchi in both 6.5x55 and 7x57 for quite some number of years now and love it. Their .223 is outstanding in my AR also.0
