1st Generation Colt SAA
a friend of a friend has a 1st generation colt saa and is trying to find some info. about it. he wrote a letter with the following stuff that is stamped on the barrel and colt responded that they had no records that could help him. the blue book of gun values does not even list the pistol. any one that can shed some light about the gun will be his hero. thanks for your help in advance......... here is what is on the barrel.. Colts Pt.F.A, Mfg Hartford Conn.
Sept 1871,July 1872. Serial # 1135. at a glance i think it has a 5 1/2 or 6 inch tube, .44 or .45 cal. and is in 10% condition at best. sorry no pictures.

Your .44 is a fairly early one, manufactured in 1878. I would spend the money to get a factory letter on it.
NOTE: Do NOT fire smokeless powder cartridges in that .44! That was made for black powder ONLY!
I'm not sure that's factory engraving on the "Buntline" and the unfluted cylinder is unusual. What's the serial number on that one?0 -

As I asked above, what is the serial number of the engraved model? It's a "Buntline Special" with a 12" barrel but I can't tell when it was made without the serial number. It looks like it may have been aftermarket engraving with what looks like a scratched front sight, possibly from a barrel vise.
Also, can you post a pic of the muzzle on the first one? It looks like it might have been cut but it could just be the angle of your pics.0 -

OK, my first impression was correct. The barrel has been cut down, either from 5 1/2" or 7 1/2".
The engraved model was originally made in 1920. It looked like 12" in the pics but thanks for the correction. I suspect it was "prettied up" by someone and didn't leave the factory in that configuration. Colt can tell you for sure.

As it doesn't appear crowned and 9" was not a standard barrel length, I suspect it was cut to 9" from an original 12" and fitted with a new, unfluted cylinder. However, it's possible Colt made it that way under a special order. They can tell you for sure.0
