shotgun length
Hi I know that the minumum barrel length is 18 inches,but does the overall length have to be 26 inches to be legal. Thanks in advance for your time.

Shotguns have to have 18" + barrels

Yes, if your state allows SBS and you go thru the hoops. Also possible to do as an AOW if you can find a receiver that has never been a shotgun (see the Serbu shorties, etc)

It is no longer a rifle or a shotgun with shorter dimensions. A pistol is shorter too and is legal because of the way it is built.
Yes you can build/buy NFA items like an SBS which is a Short Barreled Shotgun, which it not the same as a shotgun. The OP asked about Shotgun length, not Short Barreled Shotgun length.0 -
To throw another wrinkle in here, overall length is measured with the gun assembled into shooting configuration.
So if you had something like a double-shotgun that broke down into two separate pieces, the two pieces SEPARATELY could measure under 26".0
