Need relic advice- antique found
I was metal detecting today and found the frame of an old revolver. It is seriously rusted up. What is the best way to clean it up? I was thinking about soaking it in some kind of solution, but was concerned about it disintegrating.
Any info/advice much appreciated.

Here is a picture of what I found. My guess is that it is an old .32 caliber revolver. It is very heavy for its size. The cylinder and hammer are totally gone. The trigger is intact, but after trying to clean it, it may fall apart.

There are folks who specialize in collecting firearms in "relic" condition. I wouldn't do anything to the one you found except washing it in soap and water to get the dirt off. Use a scrub brush with soft bristles, no harsh abrasives like a wire wheel. Get the exact location where you found it using GPS coordinates, this is used to determine its historical significance, if any.0 -

From the configuration it looks like a common 32 short top break, five shot revolver that in prime condition might be worth $50-100.
Vintage could be between 1880-1940
I question that you're going to find much under that rust as much of the gun has been converted to red rust.0 -
Leave it as it is..Let someone else destroy further...The Dirt covering gives it loads of
character......

Best leave it as-is as others say. Whatever value to "dugup" collector is reduced by the missing cylinder and hammer which indicates it as a discarded gun rather than one lost while in use. 0
