i've never been a weatherby fan particularly but a few years ago bought a mark V lightweight (not ultralight) in 308 and am satisfied w it. decent trigger and accuracy, carries very well. still my least favorite rifle, others are dakota 76, beretta mato (both 270, how's that for redundant!), tikka 695 (300 WM), and customized FN mauser (35 whelen imp), and ruger 77/22H.

i'm a big fan of earlier tikkas, if i wanted a 7mm08 i'd look for a tikka 558/595, or moving up to weatherby price range a sako. i'm also a big fan of 7mm08 but admit i've never owned one! did pick out a 595 in 7mm08 for a friend a couple years ago and he loves it. great trigger, very good accuracy, nice wood, slick bolt. 7mm08 is extremely efficient and versatile, check out ballistic tables in a reloading manual. 7mm bullet is ideal and 308-sized case likewise. fine for everything from varmints to moose. with a 30-06 in hand i'd go for a 7mm08 rather than a 308.

my liang fen qian, 2 cents

Don't overlook the Tikka T3, TC ICON, CZ 550, or the SAKO 85. The SAKO 85 is much more rifle per dollar than the Weatherby, by the way.

Now for cartridges, the 7MM-08 will be more cost efficient, but I would reccommend the 260 Remington. If you don't have a 6.5MM/0.264" bore rifle, you owe it to yourself to check them out. That bore diameter can do everything the 7MM can do, with some extra benifits. Those being higher sectional density, thus better penetration, and on game performance. Better ballistic coefficient's, and flatter trajectory's, and less recoil, due to lighter bullet weight's. The 6.5x55 Swede is its ballistic twin from across the pond.

    Just some food for thought.

I had a Ruger M77 and Remington 700BDL and someone turned me on to Weatherby. I got a MkV Weatherby Custom in 300WM and it is my main bolt action now. It shoots 3 shot groups under 1" with factory and my reloads.

If I was to make any changes, it would have been to get a heavier barrel.
