You need to do a lot more research.

The .308 WIN cartridge is different from 7.62 mm NATO, which is military ball. They are not interchangeable in all rifles.

    The AK-47 fires the 7.62 x 39 round, a completely different cartridge.

I don't know that there is a "do it all" rifle, but it would help if you could tell us what you want it to do.

Go with a Saiga 308. Its butt ugly, but built like a tank, using the basic AK 47 mechanism. GOOGLE, the Remington semi-auto rifles they don't have the greatest reputation for reliability.

I don't know what the Saigas are selling for now but they were less then the Remingtons awhile back.

Here is a link to their commercial hunting rifles.

thanks rufe-snow. I will be checking out the Saiga 308. Do you know if it will it shoot military ammo as well as commercial 308?

I wouldn't sweat the Saiga's, they will handle anything. Personally I don't buy this business that some rifles can't handle both the 7.62 X 51 and 308 commercial ammo.

Thanks Rufe-Snow for the tip... I Googled the Remington semi-auto rifles and it is apparent that several different people have had issues with them malfunctioning. I have an Ishapore .308 Enfield and I guess I will sell it and upgrade to the Siaga. I can't decide which barrell length right now. I am leaning to the 16" though with the black synthetic stocks. Any thoughts on that?

The muzzle blast from a 16" barrel is really ugly. Not pleasant in my personal experience. I don't know what barrel lengths that the Saiga sporters are sold with? But I would definitely get one with a longer barrel. The one in the link I gave you, appears to have a longer barrel.

The Browning Bar would be another option if your looking for a more traditional looking rifle

If you got a few more $ the Benneli R-1 may be an option. You can change calibers by getting additonal barrels. Course the barrels cost as much as some other rifles....

I suggest you consider the M1A. From my experience in the military I can say they are very reliable and accurate.
