colt 1911 magizine

i was at the gun show on saturday and picked up a series 80 colt officers, real nice all mate finish light weight version, rubber wrap around, grips, all original cost me 487.00 out the door, well any way it comes with a unmarkerd mag, so as im at the show i go over and pick up a colt mag for it, its marked colt i think nothing of it, well i get home and rack the slide a few times checking for tightness, and such and all seems fine, i put the colt mag in it and its real tight going in, when i rack the slide it stays back but i cant release it or close, whats up with that, never heard anything like it before, going back to the show is not option as its far away and i would waste more gas than i paid for the mag.
any ideas as to how to make this mag work, or is it junk

    Hello colt 1911 style pistols are designed to lock the slide back when the last cartridge has been fired. Then you press the magazine release button withdraw the magazine and at this time you should be able to push the slide slightly back and push the slide stop down to let the slide go Forward. Now as to why the magazine is tight Very hard to tell without having pistol in my hand. The magazine well of the pistol might be on the small size as to spec. and the magazine might be on the large size. NEVER force a Magazine into a pistol it is like sizing a cartridge during reloading always harder to get out then get in and nothing to really get a hold to . The one thing to look for is a magazine must slide up through the trigger bow. If the trigger bow is bent even slightly this will drag on the sides of the magazine. If one magazine works freely and one is tight then I suspect the tight one is at fault.Officers model mags only hold 6 rounds but the regular Government model mags will work just stick out the bottom . Do you or one of your friends have any 1911 pistols you can try their magazines[?]

    Colt does not make their own magazines. If the magazine you bought was not in a Colt bubble pack, it is likely not one made for Colt or that meets their specifications.

    ok then if a mag is in the gun and you fire the last round, the slide stays open, but shouldnt you be able to push the slide stop down and close the slide with a empty mag, i tried 3 differnt mags all work this way. the one in question does not, so i guess is the one in question the good 1 or the 3 that close the slide when a empty mag is in the gun bad

    You should be able to let the slide forward by use of the lever even with an empty magazine in the pistol. The magazine you bought is the problem.

    Hello Timhill. The follower of a 1911 magazine has a little TAB that engages the nose on the Slide stop when the magazine follower rises up after the last round is fired . There are many designs of these followers this little tab is at the very front left side of the follower trying to push it down with the slide stop pin may or may not work . pushing it down by loading the magazines with cartridges is pushing down the follower from a different angle. IMHO I cant see any reason to not take the magazine out after the last shot drop the slide and then if you want to store a empty magazine in the pistol you can reinstall the empty magazine. New parts be it slide stop pin , magazine release , Magazine follower or any other part for that matter May take some usage to smooth out tiny BURRS left from the machining. Thus one magazine may act different then another when new.
