Vintage Scope
I just bought an old JC Higgins 31, want to put an older either 3/4" or 1" scope on it. Am leaning towards a 3/4" type because the gun is small - I've looked at the usual auction sites, come up with nothing worthwhile.
I passed on getting one at a gun show over the weekend, it had a wide view optic like the old Redfields, anyone know who made a rimfire optic that way?

You should have no trouble finding a period correct scope for your rifle, at gun shows, internet sites, right here on the wanted topic.
Most no one wants a 3/4in tube. For correctness I would find a weaver with the adjustments exposed no caps. Problem is they are steel and rust easily. The best 3/4 scope would be a redfield it looks like a modern scope with bell objectives and has better optics, alloy body. I may have one here will dig around.0 -
Most 3/4" tube scopes are designed for .22 LR cal. I don't know if the J C Higgins 31 was a centerfire. There were some 7/8" tube scopes that would be appropriate. These would include the Lyman Alaskan and the Norman Ford Texan. The 3/4" Redfield Sport-STER 2.75X and Sport-STER 4X were very high quality 3/4" tube scopes. They were made from 1965 to 1973. They now sell for $150 and up if the seller knows what he has. The same scope was marketed under the Browning name but will be even more expensive. 0 -
I have an old Weaver B4 scope mounted on a Remington Nylon 66 using the Weaver .22 Tipoff mount. I have actually been thinking of upgrading to a newer scope as my grand daughter is just starting to shoot. The B4 scope is the 3/4 inch tube. It has some slight surface rust that would clean up easily. I can send you pictures via email if you would be interested. The plastic caps are missing from the windage and elevation screws. 0 -
I have quite a few of the old steel Weavers including one made under the J C Higgins brand, so that would be a good fit but the problem with the old steel Weavers is they have tons of eye relief. I can't get enough distance between me and the rear of the scope unless I put my cheek darn near the rear end of the stock, even with the scope mounted as far forward as I can.
The scope I was thinking of is an older Bushnell Sportview - has the "TV screen" sized optic. I'll go with that or an older 1" that has suitable eye relief. If I get a 4X scope in 1" that should work. Already bought the older 3/8" based Weaver rings.0 -
I have a model 30 and sure understand the impulse. I have a couple of 99s with period scopes, but they give my old eyes a work out. My model 30 wears a Burris scope that lives my eyes a break! 0
