Tung oil on checkering ?

I am refinishing a stock. I'm applying tung oil with a rag. It has very little lint. My problem is I just repointed the checkering and they catch the rag pulling little fibers off also the tung oil doesn't seem to spread will in the checkering. Should I use a brush there? Some kind of short brush?

    I generally thin the tung oil by something like 25% and apply with an soft acid brush.

    Tung oil works best when applied with your hand .
    Rub it in with the heel of your hand .
    The heat from the friction causes it to set .
    That was in the instructions I read 30 years ago .

    Agree with the hand method. The old sage said you have to drink a quart of tong oil for it to hurt you!

    Ditto on a toothbrush for the checkering.. To remove any excess oil, just wipe the bristles on a lint free cloth.. You can repeat this 'till the checkering has the appearance of being "rubbed-in"....

    The aliphatic compounds in tung oil, & most other oil-based substances, are absorbed through the skin. The old sage probably got lung cancer from his Lucky Strikes before he found out that they are carcinogenic, mutagenic, & toxic.

    Wear protective gloves & work outside when you are using solvents.

    I've been known to flood the checkering with tung oil, brush etc. Let soak for 30 min, then blow excess out of the checkering with compressed air. Wipe off excess on stock. Thereafter I mask off the checkering to keep subsequent coats from clogging the checkering. One cautiuon on using the compressed air!!!!! If the wood is at all weak, or punky, don't use the air, or you may loose some of the points. HAWHSHAW
