Help With Loose Sling Stud

I have a very nice, old rifle with a wooden stock. The front sling stud often becomes loose. When it is tight, it is rotated almost 1/4 turn past square with the gun, so each time I carry it the sling pulling on it unscrews it.

What should I do to fix this?

    Temporary fix- uncrew stud. Take a very small bit of steel wool, roll into a rod about half the size of the hole in the stock, stick into hole. trim surplus with a pair of sissors. Reinsert screw for sling. Should take up some of the extra space in the hole.

    I use "shoe goo" . Take out the screw and fill hole with "shoe goo" put the screw back into the hole and let dry. Wipe of the excess. Works great.

    You could get a stud that goes all the way through the forend and counter sink the stock a little and put some lock tite on the nut.

    Or get the Marine Tex competitor that can be drilled,sanded, etc. IIRC it comes in a yellow/white box.

    You don't say if it has a machined nut on the inside or not, if it does take the nut out from the inside and rotate half a turn reinstall and tighten . If it's a lag type , remove it and put about 4 pieces of mono fishing line in the hole length ways and screw the stud back in. Trim excess line with razor blade about one turn before bottoming out . Totally invisible and holds good . Works for chainsaw screws that won't stay tight too !

    When I have a wood screw work loose, I take a toothpick, place it in the hole, trim it to length and then put the screw back in. It's always worked on door hinges and the like.
