Remington 870, 1100, 1187
I was wondering what is the differenve between the remington 870 1100 and 1187. I am looking for an auto loader thats is an all around good gun, it will be used basically for target shooting and maybe hunting but not much at all. And I was also thinking about installing the xrailbyrci. Main thing whats the difference?

870 is pump. Dates to 1950. Perhaps more by far have been sold than any other pump shotgun. 1100 is the older self loader, circa early 60s. 1187 is supposedly an improvement on the 1100, but when they tried to phase out the 1100 the consumers screamed bloody murder and demanded them back.
Look here. 1100 rated 4th best gun ever. Was revolutionary because it reduced recoil dramatically.

870 is the most popular shotgun made. It is a pumpgun. The 1100 is the most popular autoloader made and comes in every gauge, style, and configuration available. It was introduced in 1961. The 11-87 is the same gun with improved gas ports and 3 inch chamber. They all have about the same drop, length of pull and feel. Very reliable, moderately priced and widely available. 0 -
As stated the 1187 is the New version of the 1100. The main improvement is that you can shoot 2 3/4" & 3" shells without having to change barrels like you would have to do with the 1100. The 870 is a pump shotgun. All three are great. 0 -

Do not know about the 1100 or 11-87 but I LOVE my 870. Bought it brand new when I was 16 with the first $100 I ever earned (my dad signed for me). Great gun! In 40 years not one misfire!I cannot say that about my autos. I have four other shotguns and love my Benelli autos but if I could only have one gun on a desert island it would be my 870. I prefer it 10 times over my Benelli Nova (which I really really dislike).
My 870 is only 2.75" but is a Wingmaster and still looks great after 40 years. I cannot speak to the "Express" models.0 -

I don't know what the production numbers are, I would assume in the million/s range. If looking to buy one, check out the used gun section. Usually you can find them for less $ than new.
I bought both of my 870's used. One is a 2 3/4" Wingmaster, the other is a 3.5" Express Magnum. Don't think I paid more than $275 for each.0 -
I own a model 1100 but not a model 870. Beginning to think I should buy a classic old 870 Wingmaster. It's like having 30-06. Whether you need it or not, as gun lovers, we have to pay homage to greatness. 0 -
I own an 870 Express. Using a 18" rifle sighted slug barrel (smooth bore) that I had parked. To reduce the recoil I went with a Knoxx Spec-Op stock. Man does this reduce the recoil significantly. With 3" mag 1 oz slugs it shot more like a 410. With the adjustable stock makes this go to go with anyone (woman, kid). Even my scrawny stepson (5-10, 110 lbs) can put them in the black @ 100 yrds. Remmington 870 is hard to beat! 0
