Model 70 original finish???

It is supposed to be original. Im not sure. Do any of you mind looking at the auction pictures and let me know what you think?
It is pretty shinny on the wood and the reciever is not the Matt finish that Im used to seeing. But this is a fairly early gun.

    I think the stock has been varnished. Better pictures would tell more. Metal looks like original blue.

    I tend to agree with Allen, the stock has been refinished, I believe the blue is original. Take the rifle out of the stock, you may be able to tell looking at the inside edges of the stock.

    Stock poorly refinished,,,imo,,,but nice rifle.

    Rex;
    Whitaker and Rule state that Winchester finished the stocks with several coats of clear lacquer and final coat contained wax. That would give the "oily shine" exibited in the pics. My '52 collection has some with that type of finish and some with a dull matt finish.
    IMHO could be original. '48 is a transitional period weapon. Blueing looks correct , although several worn spots.

    I think its original and color looks right. The lack of shine underneath is typical. At second glance I would bet $ it original and someone has put pledge on it.... Someone got a good buy on that original clover leaf gun.

    Well, that next to last pictire sure does not look right,,,but I am no expert on these,,,maybe Pledge,,,[?] as you stated cartod. Just "looks" not right,,frequently wrong though.[:)]

    I wasnt trying to discredit you Nambu, I was just stating what I see. If you look at the first 2 photos you can see stains of where there was a slip on recoil pad that only comes with lots of time. Also if the gun were refinished poorly the color would be off (which its not) and the grain would not be filled correctly the way this gun is. Im about 99% sure its original.

    I dont tout myself as an expert either, but I have refinished model 70's and have had several pass through my hands. someone may have applied something over the finish but the original has never been removed.

    No problem there,,,as I look now at what you state,,,then a different "light" is on.. You can't learn enough on these boards/

    Thanks all of you. I do feel much better now. I like it and wanted a "clover leaf " gun. So this will work as will use it and enjoy it. Eventually I want a Pre War 270 that it really nice also,


    Cartod: I picked up a really nice 30 WCF SRC this past weekend. It is nearly as nice as the 38 55 I lost on a week before last.

    A SRC in 38-55 is a keeper. Congrats on the 30-30, finding them in good cond. is getting harder and harder.
