Actually you need to think about what YOU want in a rifle, do you want one that is set up as a battle rifle, a varmint rig, benchrest shooting, hunting deer, etc. The AR platform is great and there is a huge variety of configurations. decide what you are gonna use the rifle for most and then we can give you some reccomendations to check out. Lots of the .223 and 5.56 calibers are out there. So the parts are plentiful. Some brands use contract mass-produced parts. On the upper you may find a square that Double Star marks their uppers with and bear a different logo on the receiver as a hole gun. It really doesn't matter much as they seem to fallow common specs. Your fire control group pins vary in diameter though. A 308 receiver is different than a A/R 15. You have more options with the .223 & 5.56 because it's more common. I'd go with a non-chromed bore 1/9 twist so there's no variance in bore spec diameter so it'll reduce the chance of a case getting stuck if you shoot steel cased ammo. Also look for a chrome lined bolt carrier (look for a dull silver plating around the bolt shaft to carrier area) because the impingement gas system dumps lots of carbon there so it'll be easier to clean. Most will have the classic A2 grip. I personally like the Pmag for a magazine. Some have stainless alloy springs (gray in color) the others may use standard springs. The collapsible 4-6 position stock makes the riffle adaptable for various users of arm length. A fixed stock has no play. You'll do better with a flat top for scope mounting or red dot. Most likely you'll run into the M4 style that could receive a (M203?) grenade launcher although I'm not sure if you could do that in the civilian world. Most likely not, but that's why the 16" barrel is staged weirdly. Realistically there's not much that makes one better than the other if you compare a brand's M4 to a different brand's M4 if they look alike and have the same features. Candy comes in different flavors as do A/R's in accessories & stocks. Gas piston systems are becoming more popular as apposed to impingement. I'd love to see a gas piston system vs impingement performance test in sub-zero temperatures. I believe Smith&Wesson MP series might be a sale item for this month (don't quote me on that). If you go with a common NATO caliber the ammo is easier to find in bulk. Calibers include: 308, 6.8spc,.458SOCOM,.40S&W,9MM,&.22. I really like Rock River Arms. If you don't see what you like and know what you like you can build one yourself in about 1.5-3 hours but the receiver must go through an FFL dealer all other parts except a grenade launcher can be purchased any where if legal to ship in or to your state. 0
