RE-BLUE IS A LOOSER on a 0% shooter the equation is : x - $$ = next to no value. At least when there's no finish you can find a fool to buy it who figures he can fix it up a little but he'll wind up in a hole.

as is worth about $200 if shootable, a 'good' reblue will make it look nice again and improve value by about the cost of the reblue. the dent can be removed.

Get the dent fixed and go ahead and get it reblued and enjoy it. You have nothing in it and with a nice reblue a cowboy shooter will buy it or you can keep it and enjoy it. It is worth more than 200.00 if it is tight and a good shooter depending where and how deep the dent is. Decide now if you want to crop the barrell to 20" and if the dent is on the barrel toward the end or in any part of the barrel that will be cut off go for it and have the gunsmith put a new bead on it also before reblue of crop it and put a bead on it and shoot it in its present condition. Can you pop up a few pics?

I have a guy who gave me an old Winchester model 1897 12 gauge. If there was any blueing on it, it is all gone, what is left is a silver finish. Is this gun worth anything, he is inquiring about reblueing it or just hanging it up. There is a very small indent on the barrel where it got hit against something. Can this be taken out? Should I have it reblued for him? Or is it worth more just as it is above the mantel?
    Thanks,

Sorry about that. He does not know much about guns and he gave it to me to find out what I can find out about it. He will get the gun back when we figure out if I should send it in to have it reblued or not. And I am cleaning it up a bit for him.
