Caliber of custom Mauser????????
Have a military converted K98 8mm mauser marked 264.49 , Anyone knows if this is the caliber and what it is? It does chamber 8mm, but that doesn't mean much.

This happens fairly often. There were a lot of gunsmiths who created their own wildcat round, made theilr own reamers and never marked the barrel or recorded their work. Even with a chamber casting you may not be able to identify the cartridge. To have custom dies made to fit something would be cost prohlibitive, never mind the work involved in reloading. In that case your only hope is to be able to rechamber the gun to something standard. Recently a guy sent me 6 chamber castings that matched nothing in the books that I have. 0 -

I agree, the chamber cast is the only way to know for sure. If you're at all handy just order a bar of cerrosafe from brownells and you can do it yourself (also assuming you have some calipers). Otherwise, to the smith! [|)]0 -
If it chambers an 8mm Mauser case, load a primed case with 10 grains of 2400, fill balance with Cream of Wheat, point skyward and fire.
If the case shoulder sharpens up but doesn't move forward, it's 8X57.
Check neck diameter before and after.
Drive a lead ball forward from the breech to verify bore diameter.0 -
Case the chamber and slug the barrel,then measure it. If you don`t have the avaible tools go to Brownnels and get what you need or go to a good gunsmith.[;)] 0 -
Does it still have the stepped contour military barrel?
If so that and the fact that it will accept an 8mm cartridge is a strong indicator that it IS still an 8mm.

Sure, there have been a lot of Mausers rechambered for one reason or another, so get that chamber cast. I bet it is still plain old 7.92x57, though.0
