S & W .41 Caliber Mountain Gun, any good?

While looking for a 44 Mag revolver at my local gun dealer, I came across this S&W Model 57 .41 Magnum Mountain Gun. It's got the 4" barrel and looks good. He tells me it's similar to a 44 Magnum, just a tad smaller. I may get it instead, not sure yet.

I like it, but is this a good reliable long term gun? I'm assuming so, but would like any input on it.

    The 41 Mag Mountain Gun is an excellent backpacking, hiking revolver. While its not as powerful as the 44 Mag, its certainly capable, with the right loads, of turning back a four legged (or two legged) attack with authority. I have the Mountain Gun in 45 Colt and with the +p loads, it will do what I want it to do.

    Gun is excellent. Its as tough and reliable as any other Smith and Wesson revolver, and in fact, the smaller bore and cylinder holes should make it stronger than a .44 magnum.

    Caliber is excellent, as you might imagine, the .41 is more powerful than a 357 magnum, but less than a 44 magnum. Its a much older round, but its comparable somewhat to the 10mm auto in terms of ballistics.

    Problem with .41 magnum is that ammo is somewhat scarce and expensive. Its not unavailable, but you're going to have a hard time finding it at a Walmart or any sporting goods store.

    So its basically a reloaders cartridge.

    If you aren't interested in reloading it, I'd suggest a .44 magnum instead. With the appropriate loads, the .44 can do anything the .41 can do, but the converse isn't true.

    I was curious about the ammo, that'll help me decide.

    There is nothing wrong with the 41mag. It is more powerful than the 10mm but the Glock 20 10mm has 15 rounds of bear stopping rounds the 41 and 44 mag only has 6. You might look at the 10mm Glock. My rounds have 710 foot pounds of energy at the muzzel and i have 15 rounds. My 2 cents [8D]

    Buffalo bore makes some excellant ammo for the 41 mag. From a 170 gr j.h.p at 1550 fps from a 4" barrel to a 230 gr keith to 265 gr l.w.n bullet at 1300 fps.a little expensive but very good ammo. It really perks up my m 57[:)]

    The 41 mag does have a lot going for it and ballistically, it is better than the 44 mag. Unfortunately, loaded specialty ammunition is hard to find.

    Another thing you may want to consider is one day getting a rifle in a matching caliber. That would be more difficult for a 41 mag than a 44mag.

    Unless your rich, if your'e gonna shoot it regularly, you better reload. Factory loaded ammo is scarce and reletively expensive.
    I have a Ruger BH in .41 and shoo the snot out of it. And yes, I reload. Another advantage to reloading the .41, is you can tailor your loads to the situation your going into.
