remove stock from a SxS shotgun
I dont know how to remove the stock from my double barrel shotgun. I have removed the but pad and that is no help. Do I have to take apart the receiver?

I need to take the stock off so I can refinish it. by the way what type of metal would you guess the receiver is?0 -
The receiver is steel. Either nickel, chrome, or silver plated. My guess is nickel.
This is not your run of the mill, cheap Spanish shotgun. Refinishing the stock is probably not a good idea. It is a "sidelock" gun.0 -
First grind yourself some screwdrivers that properly fit the screws so as not to bugger up screw heads any worse than they are.
Cock both hammers.
Remove sideplate screws.
Screw into a sideplate threaded hole from the outside and wiggle the rear of the sidelock free first. The sidelock fronts, key into the receiver.
Once a sidelock is removed the opposite one can be pushed out from the inside rear. Do it gently so as not to chip the stock.
Next remove the triggerguard screws.
From top of the receiver tang there is a large screw head that holds the upper tang to the triggerguard. Remove that and the stock should come off.
Be very carefull about all this as removal of these metal parts can break wood chips out where wood is closely inletted to metal parts.
Wiggle gently and loosen parts in wood to break free before lifting out.
The sidelocks and receiver are chrome plated iron or steel.0 -
djh: you are getting good advice about not refinishing the stock; it's hard to tell without seeing it, but unless it's a complete wreck, leave it alone. You need special screwdrivers ground to fit the thin screw slots on the tang bolts etc; even after you get it apart and if you decide to refinish it, don't use agressive sanding as the wood ends up undersize. Chemical stripping can do the job, but the results usually look terrible. This looks like a pretty decent Spanish gun, my 2 cents worth: don't refinish it. 0 -
Thank you for the excellent advice. The varnish is old and you can scrape it off with a finger nail. So I can do its with min wood loss. I'm just going to sand it off with 150 grit. There are 3 long but not too deep scratches that run the length of the stock and the checkering needs the edges to be re cut so I really want to refinish it 0 -

+1 dont polish it you dont want it shiney. Start another thread and post some photos of the stock. I think the reciever is nickel. I see some buggered screw heads already where someone removed the side lock, try not to bugger it up any more. That screw head can be easily fixed though.0
