I'm kind of bored and I'd
    like to get a shootable
military bolt 308 so I can tinker.
Any suggestions what I can look
for that won't blow up in my face
    shooting commercial ammo.
    Thanks-so much Ron

Yep...a USMC Model 24. The best 308 sniper rifle there is.

Israeli mauser in 7.62x51, the FR-8, convert some other mauser, Indian Enfield

After reading your follow up post I'd recommend getting a mauser action of some sort and rebarreling it

The m24 is used by the army and the usmc uses the m40. It will also cost you 7000+. Look at savage is what I recommend.

    rong,

If you fill in with some details we might be able to get some more suggestions.

What type of tinkering are you thinking about?

    Best.

What , I'd like is an old Military bolt
action in 308 that I can modify the stock
and generally dork around with it-maybe
dill and tap a few holes
-It doesn't matter where it was made as long
as it is inexpensive as I'll prolly
ruin it. Sorry I wasn't more descriptive.
    Thanks-Ron

I'm assuming then you eventually want to put glass on it then? But, for the meantime you will want to shoot it open sights.

What I would do is go over on the auction side and look and see what you can find in 'Mauser', then 'Savage', then Remington 700, change the 700 to 721 and then 722. You'll see a bunch of stuff.

Your problem is that the .308 was designed for automatic rifles like M14 and FAL. The only bolt action military .308s other than expensive sniper rifles are such things as the Israeli and Spanish guns that iwanna mentions. They are bolt actions converted from obsolete calibers so that trainees and service troops could get some use out of the old guns with fresh ammo.

Your best bet would be to get a common 8mm to play with. Something cheap enough to mess with will not likely have any collector value. I think surplus 8mm ammunition is still reasonably available.

Or a Moisin Nagant in 7.62x54R. To put a scope on you would need to bend the bolt handle, but they are running under $150 and ammo isn't too hard to find. Power is comparable to a 308/30-06.
