S&W 686

I am trying to find info on a n S&W 686 7 shot with a 7" barrel.
I have not found one in the auctions,is this rare?
The box is marked #0278 under the special order spot.

    Has anyone had any problems with this model of S&W? I know the 66s and 19 will shoot loose with a steady diet of mag loads. How about the 686? Thanks.

    The 686 models with the unfluted cylinder aren't that common, but unfortunately for you, your gun probably isn't going to command much (if any) premium in price over a similar unfluted 686 unless its unfired and in the original box.

    In terms of custom vs production guns, Smith makes a production .44 magnum classic hunter with an unfluted cylinder (or at least did for many years):

    What's the advantage to an unfluted cylinder? Two advantages:

    a. Adds weight, which can reduce recoil/muzzle flip.
    b. Appearance.


    What's the disadvantage to an unfluted cylider? Two disadvantages:
    a. Adds weight, which can make the gun harder to carry and manipulate.
    b. Appearance.
