Mauser 98

I have seen quite a few rifles on gunbroker for sale that are Mauser 98 actions and are reasonably priced. Are they reasonably good actions or what's the scoop on them?

    I have a Mauser 98 that I received from my dad. He doesn't remember anything about the gun, it's caliber, year, model etc. It has the markings Rax98 and the serial number is 9033 with some kind of mark underneath it and on the bottom of the barrel under the stock is stamped BO.955 It has a BERLIN PECAR 6x59 scope on it that I found out was purchased in 1959. Does anyone know how I can find out more about this gun?, its absolutely gorgeous and in mint condition. I really want to know the caliber and the year it was made and any other information that I can. Thanks zlaw_1@charter.net

    sporterized Model 98 mauser. 99 % chance 8X57 caliber. Go to sticky some of the top post on this forum on HOW TO POST PICTURES . You will need pictures to get best price if you sell on this auction site.

    These double dated rifles were used by the post First World War German army. The 1920 date is the identifier. Unfortunately when they have been sportized as yours has they loose any collectors value. Because of this it's only value is to someone who's looking for a inexpensive deer rifle. Cosmetics and caliber will affect the value greatly. Best if you could post some quality photos for assessment help.

    If memory serves, the 1920 stamping is not a date as we would know it. It's a 'Seal of Approval'.

    It signifies that post-war German equipment was approved for use according to the 1920 accords (Liege? Paris?), either by alteration of the firearms, or by downsizing stockpiles.

    I can remember such from research of the C-96 type Mauser pistol. Best, Joe
