    Mark, you are psychic.[:D][;)]

Add another vote for the M1 Garand, on my behalf.[8D]

I'm with Mark on this one. Every one you see in his pictures has been battle tested, most likely. I would opt for the real M-14 over the M1A though, given the choice.

I like the DPMS LR 308 series too, but they have not stood the test of time. The FN-FAL is another good one.

I am VERY biased due to family and upbringing, but I feel the M1 Garand Rifle HAS to be the undisputed champ.

Two of my favorite quotes regarding the Garand are:

"The greatest battle implement ever devised."
-- General George S. Patton, Jr.

"Son, the Garand is probably the only reason you are on this planet."
    --Corporal James Nininger, Sr.

I have heard lots of good things about the "new" .30 cal systems though.

I would take the M1A if I could only have one. bBut I would be lonely so you will have to buy another one and another one . Tim

    Don't count the FAL out.

    1) FAL

    2) PTR91

cost for rifles @1k$-ish. check cdnn for a ptr 91.

both rifles are accurate out to 300+ yards. parts, easy to find. mags easy to find, don't cost a ton of money.

never had a failure to feed, fire, eject from either rifle. with good reloads both rifle produce sub 3 inch groups with open sights, forgive my 64 year old eyes. with a good scope and ammo the fal will shoot 1 1/4 inch groups.

down side, if you pack either rifle with 6 magazines..... well things get heavy.

m1 and m1a are fine rifles, but their gas systems could be a problem.

I would say the M-14 or the M1 Garand. I would take either one.

It's tragic to let it just sit in the safe all alone. Even Noah took two of everything!

    FN-FAL

Battle tested (against itself even!), relatively inexpensive, lots of parts, dirt cheap mags, adjustable gas. Whats not to love?

    In before lock?
    :)
