I would say the .22 mag because packs a punch. If you are looking at range get the .17 though.

I've been looking at making a 17 HMR purchase. I do have a Winchester 9022 in 22 mag that I absolutely adore. Ok, It isn't mine NOW, it belongs to my eldest son. This is an awesome little gun.

What type of action are you looking for? bolt, single, lever??

Henry makes a nice lever action 17HMR.

If only smaller varmints then the 17 would give you less drop at 200. But the 22 mag will have more killing power wiht a bullet 50-100% heavier and it will resist wind better.

I'd recommend the Savage 93 BTV. A few extra mags, a bipod and a scope. I've got a Simmons WTC 6.5-20x50 w/ AO on mine, hovers around 1" at 100 yards w/ CCI 40 grain TMJ or JHP.

17 HMR is too light for coyotes or big woodchucks. Wind drift is very apparent with 17 over 100 yards. Both are excellent out to 150 yds on 4 lb varmints with the 22 mag reaching 200 yds with practice and a good scope.

    Hello 5mm guy,
I suggest you check out the Marlin 17 VS. I have been very pleased with it. For smaller critters like Prairie Dogs, it's the cats meow. I outshot our guide that uses a .22 magnum two years in a row. The 3rth year he was using a 17 HMR and put it on me.

Shoot, you are the "5MMGUNGUY" why in the world would you get anything other than the 5MM Mag? I know it wasn't the question but the 5MM outshoots both of the calibers you reference. JMHO!

And in 5 years when no ammo is available (again) then what?
