ported rifel barrel
Would porting as shown in the photo increase the perceived volume of the report for the shooter? I already have tinnitus and I sure don't want to make it worse.

It makes it much louder to the shooter and anyone to the side of the muzzle. 0 -

Generally speaking, any redirection of the report by porting will result in an increased noise level.
That's why, in every case, we always recommend the use of sound suppression devices such a muffs or plugs. In my situation, I use both.

That looks like Magna-Porting . IMHO it is the least obtrusive , I can't tell the difference between it and no brake at all . While there are more effective muzzle brakes available they will beat the snot out of your ears . Always wear good hearing protection . Most flinches are from muzzle blast , not recoil as most people think ! 0 -
What did you say? Yes, as has been previously stated any porting or brakes will increase the number of decibels that reach your ear...unless you block them using good hearing protection.
In my youth, I was very strong headed and stupid. I also work in a factory invironment with loud machinery. I do have hearing loss, and try to protect every bit of it I have left, except for when hunting.
As for the reply of oneoldsap...,
The Mag-Na-Port works best on magnum handguns. In my experience with high volume magnum rifles, there is no where enough venting to bleed off the required gass to reduce the secondary recoil effects. There are much more efficient brakes to do that.

Ports of any kind increase noise a great deal. Bought a 270, 15 in. Encore barrel with a factory brake. I wanted to use it for hunting so I tried it without muffs or plugs. Shot it twice and got rid of it. The muzzle blast rang my ears, much like getting punched in the head. No ports for hunting firearms ever again! 0 -

.270 Winchester cartridge + 15" barrel = too much noise and pressure making it the fault of the brake or porting.

ditto on the strong headed & stupid. I worked in a nail mill one summer where they gave us cotton balls for earplugs. I didn't wear those unless the boss was looking. Now I wear plugs and muffs for pistol shooting.0 -
