Remove Ruger Mk I Barrel?

I would like to change a barrel on my early ruger mk I. Looks like you could tweek the receiver if the barrel sticks, as it seems a rather light piece. anyone out there have info? thanks

    getting the barrel off is no problem.
    if this is your first time, you should get a book. many people have a problem getting it back together.

    the ruger mk-1 pistol has a very robust receiver, the barrel just threads in (you must remove the reciver from the grip fraim first). most are fitted very tight and special tools may be reqired to remove it.

    Very VERY tight You best have a barrel wrench with inserts and being the barrel is tapered Take an insert that is larger then barrel and epoxy barrel to insert then heat epoxy to remove barrel from insert.

    I made special inserts for my barrel vise and special inserts for my receiver wrench so they fit perfectly w/o distortion and with maximum grip....still could not get the barrel off a Mark II. Never did get it off. Good luck.

    If you're wanting to remove a tight barrel, plan on sacrificing the barrel to minimize damage to the receiver.
    Cut a groove with lathe or hacksaw about 3/16" deep completely around the barrel about 1/16" away from the receiver. This will relieve most of the compressive force between barrel shoulder and receiver.
    The barrel will come out easily after this.

    This wasnt an option with me, some yahoo sanded the front 1 1/2" end of the barrel so it had a two-tone look of blue and white [V] (I cant figure people out...said there was scratch there he was trying to get rid of..yeah, he got rid of it allright!) and I needed to reblue it. Just wound up stripping the barrel while still on the frame, polishing it, then using belgian blue with the receiver still attached. Worked great, got the gun cheap because of the looks but fixed it up right purty!!
    Litetrigger, do you plan on keeping the old barrel?

    No, Im not going to use the old bbl. I plan to use a heavy bbl. the one on the gun is a sporter bbl.
