EARLY FN Commercial Sporter 30-06
I am looking at an FN in 30-06 , serial number 19xx ( four digit). Any idea on the age of this rifle? It has all kinds of prof marks on the barrel.

The proof marks on the barrel look to be just standard Belgian commercial proofs. The safety on the back of the bolt and the stock reinforcing bolt make it appear to be a military type rifle. I don't know enough about the early FN commercial rifles to say if they were sold with these military type features? 0 -
I have one like it across my knees as I type this. Mine is #1816. They are commercial all the way. 1948. There is a very nice FN crest under that scope base. They were not drilled and tapped for scope mounts but were (as yours is) for receiver sights. I bought mine used and it came with a Redfield sight and a Williams side mount scope base on it. The little round circles/dots at the border of the checkering near the grip cap is kind of a trade mark on these. Does it have the origional horn FN butt plate on it?
And rufe-snow: You can't tell from that picture, but that is a scope safety. It operates similiar to the Buehler only on the left side (your thumb has to be across the grip to reach it).0 -
