Old Shotgun
I have an old shotgun. It's barrel is marked Strong Fire Arms Company and the receiver states A. Dickerman. Does anyone know anything about this fire arm?

I have recently acquired an old shotgun but I'm not sure of it's origins or worth. It is a 16GA side-by-side hammerless double barrell, and has Fluss-Stahl Krupp-Essen on both barrells. Under the barrells is stamped, Gustloff Werke Waffewerke Suml. Can you tell me more about it? 0 -
Good Morning and Welcome. Between 1880 and 1940 it was quite popular for wholesale and retail sporting goods dealers as well as Uncle John's Country Corner Store to want inexpensive shotguns with names of their own choosing on them to sell. The major makers were only too happy to meet this demand. Today these guns are commonly referred to as "Trade Brand Name" shotguns. Again that is a shotgun made by a major maker for and sold by a wholesaler or retailer who chose the name to go on the gun. I have listings for over 1,000 different names both domestic and foreign that were used. I am sorry to report that NEW DUQUESNE is not among them. However that is no surprise, there were so many names used and not all of them were recorded. It has been said that the biggest maker of such shotguns, Crescent Fire Arms Company of Norwich,CT (1892 to 1932) would make as few as twelve guns with some selected name as long as the buyer paid for the die made up to stamp the name on the gun. Usually when we find an unknown name like this we blame it on Crescent. A possibility of identifying your gun is to located the position of the serial number. If it is on the lower tang just behind the trigger guard, Crescent made the gun. Value? Everyone wants to know. The value of one of these old guns depends on its condition, the amount of original finish remaining on the metal and wood as well as the mechanical condition. Values can range from a high of maybe $175 for one that appears to have come out of the factory yesterday afternoon to less that $10 for a rusty rotten incomplete piece of junk fit only for a fireplace poker. I find at least one (new?) unknown name a month. This is the first for April. 0 -
My guess like like Ned said was a trade brand name shotgun. It probubly cam from a small store in Duquesne p.a. 0 -
The serial number is on the lower tang behind the trigger guard so I guess it is a Cresent. Thanks for the info. I'll try to find out more about the age of it via internet serch. Thanks again for your help. 0 -
O.K. I held off giving you a date because I wasn't sure that the gun was a Crescent made. Now that we know, it was made in 1897. By the way, I have added the name to my list of Crescent made guns. Who it was made for and sold by, we'll never know. 0 -
