Holographic magnifiers
Hey guys, I am thinking about putting a holographic sight on my AR-15, then I saw a flip away magnifier(never seen one before), are they worth having, if so what are some good quality combos. Also will the magnifiers work with other optics, such as red dot?

The individual pieces are almost $600 each, but if you buy them as the set shown in the link above (557g23), and shop around, you can get them for as little (ha!) as around $850.
Yes, this setup also works with a red dot. Keep in mind the MOA size of the dot, because when magnified it becomes larger (in the sight picture at least) or smaller when not magnified. The red dots are not as crisp as the holograph.
I suspect, since your zeroing is done with holograph, a less expensive magnifier would work to your satisfaction. Keep in mind you may also have to purchase the FTS (flip to side) mount along with the magnifier, that you get as part of the package deal in the link. You will also have the added variable of height alignment.
In addition, give some thought to the holographic sight. Most Eotech models have the buttons facing the shooter, where they are inaccessable with the magnifier in place (not that big of a deal as you can flip it). For the FTS model, the buttons are on the side.
If you are not sure, you could start with the holograph and add the magnifier later (though like I said, that costs more).
Are they worth having? Well, the obvious use is a quick change from close quarters targets to medium range. If they are worth it is really up to you. They do work fairly well though. For the money you could also get a Trijicon ACOG 3x. That will work better for medium and long range, but not as well as the holo for close range
As for other combo's, someone else will have to chime in. I know Mako makes a magnifier that is much less expensive (but I don't know if it is any good), and LaRue makes a quality FTS mount. I would steer clear of the Eotech clones.

a flip magnifier can be pretty handy, Burris makes one called the tripler, and they also made a FTS mount for it, the magnifer and mount will cost you less then half of what a eotech or aimpoint magnifer will cost you, and are just as good IMhO.
One thing I'd tell you not to do, do not sacrifice your folding rear sight to mount a magnifer, the iron sight never needs barrteries.

Burris also used to sell a "pivot-ring" for 60 dollars or so, but it seems they no longer do. If that is the case then the Larue FTS would be my choice as well, though any Quick Dtach 30mm ring that will allign the magnifer with the sight window would be a cheaper option..

a magnifier isnt something special in and of itself, it is basically just a low magnification monocular.. any of them will work with all inclosed red dots/
the magnifiers mount sets back from the back of the eotch just alittle bit, so you can still get to the bottons, it is just awkward to do.. Also if you have the rail space you can set a magnifer an inch or two behind the red dot, it doesnt effect the image.
Well You may want to Looks into the EOTech XPS or Aimpoint H-1.
A few other ways to mount a mini red dot without giveing up your scope.
Burris perp, allows you to mount a red dot over the scope, if you have low profile turrets.

One thing I forgot to mention is my AR is a RRA predator with flat top reciever.I currently have 1" riser and simmons 44 mag scope. 0 -

The holosights and dot sights are mainly intended for close range combat type shooting. If you know you're going to do a lot of long range work, you'd want a more traditional scope.
The point of the flip away magnifier is to retain the nice close range features of your dot or holosight, but to make it easier to place mid-range shots if the need arises. I think its a nice thing to have, if you want to place shots precisely much out past 100 yards. Do you?
You don't necessarily have to decide right away, since you can always add a magnifier later if you think it will help you.
Yes, these ought to work with any normal dot-type sight.
I forget the details (sorry), but I know there is a good "twist-off" type mount that allows you to take the magnifier entirely off and replace it as necessary. This may (or may not) be a better option than a side-flippy one depending on how often you think you might want to use this, and your tolerance for weight/clutter on the top of your gun. I believe the twisty mount also lets you drop in a DIFFERENT optic easier (eg your night vision one).
As Quickmajik says, its the sight that provides the aiming reticle and zero.
So the quality of the actual sight is a lot more important than that of the magnifier, and you legitimately can get away with a cheaper magnifier and not really give anything up.0 -
