Savage Model 99

I HAVE A SAVAGE 99. I KNOW FROM THE SERIAL# IT WAS MANUFACTURED IN 1940. HOWEVER IT DOES NOT HAVE THE WORDS "MODEL 99" (A B C D E EG EGR F G R RS T K ETC ETC)STAMPED ANY WHERE THAT I CAN SEE. IS THERE SOMEPLACE WHERE I CAN FIND THE EXACT MODEL DESIGNATION THAT I HAVE?
THE RIFLE IS CHECKERED, HAS A PISTOL GRIP, 24"BARREL, BEAD SIGHT IN A RAISED RAMP, SCHNABEL FORE-END. HOWEVER AS I SAID IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE THE WORDS "MODEL 99"STAMPED ANYWHERE ON IT LET ALONE THE LETTER IN ORDER TO IDENTIFY IT. THANKS FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION AND HELP IN SOLVING THIS MYSTERY!!

    Not looking for dollar value..what do you guys think of this gun? Accurate - quality ect caliber is 308 thanks!

    "Most" older savages from the 1940's thru mid 50's or so were EG's. These were generally 24" barrels on Receiver said "Savage Model 99". They had checkered stocks with open sights. The most popular caliber was the 300 Savage.Please also realize...I said "Most"...there were many different models and different calibers of this era. "EG" was NOT on the receiver. For a more accurate identification...pictures and description would be necessary. I would guess that the EG represented about 75% of total production...I am only guessing on this...I do not have any facts to back me up. I do think however it is fair to say that MOST older Savages of this ara are the EG's.

    I was able to take this gun to a local guy who is very familiar with model 99's. He stated is was made around 1942 era, and that is was a model e. However, I didn't think to ask. Which is more valuable? Is an e pretty high, low, or mid-grade?

    There were few if any Model 99's made in 1942 due to World War 2.The 99E was discontinued in 1935. The G was a takedown with pistol grip discontinued in 1941.(Is there a metal takedown release on the forearm?) The EG was built from 1935 until 1960 (with the exception of 1941-1945). Savage letter designations were chronological design changes, not optional production grades. The introduction of one, did not necessarily mean the discontinuation of the previous.Many were available concurrently and overlapped many years.
