Sheridan pellet rifle
I have an old Sheridan Racine w/s 53403 20 cal. 5mm. I have not shot it in years it is a pump type. I need a bit of advice. What is the max. pumps for this gun and where can I get an o ring or seal kit to rebuild? does anyone know where to get the owners manual? Thanks

I had one many years ago and, as I recall, they recommended a maximum of 10 pumps.

I seem to recall the maximum recommended being seven. It's been probably fourty years since I bought one & maybe twenty since I sold it but that is my best recollection. I do know that by that point it would be very hard to go more. They also noted the danger of damaging
the seals by over pumping.0 -
Thanks I just finished disassembling cleaning and reassembling it. It still works like new. I am ordering a seal kit from one of the sites you have listed. I have a son and it is about time to start teaching him some shooting safety skills. 0 -

Glad to help. You might ask the company you're ordering the parts from if they can either copy a manual for you or at least tell you the maximum pumps.

I have owned & used a Sheridan Silver Streak bought new in 1956 & installed a new seal kit plus new piston/rod assy. several years ago. A little tricky to get the lead seals in just the right place IIRC. Not practical to use more than about seven full pumps. Short stroking affects pressure as does the speed of the stroke. Excessive pressure not good for the internals & all the overpressure may not be released at once so don't go there. 0 -
BTW, I have a book titled "Know your Sheridan Rifles & Pistols" by Ronald Elbe, it contains history, ID, ser# (starting 1972) parts diagrams and owners instructions. Says maximum eight pumps. Can be found on Amazon but a little spendy at $25 incl. shipping. Good book, though. Also have just located my original owners manual, which says stay well under ten pumps. Have you tried Benjamin Sheridan for an owners manual? 0 -
STill have the bluestreak my dad got me in 1950 something. One rebuild about 20 years ago. Still works great. 10 was the recommended max. I did a fair amount of chrono work with it once and concluded that after 8 you were pretty much working for the exercise, and yes, yonson is right, too many pumps and you can get partial release, no to mention the strain on parts. Biggest revelation for me was that this little rifle REALLY responds to quality pellets. The sheridan pellet is a good design but prone to uneven skirts, in my experience, which lead to mediocre accuracy. With quality pellets like those Beeman used to sell it's a very accurate little rifle. 0 -

I think the main danger is valve lock and you won't really break anything if you add one or two pumps too many. The valve opens against air pressure so you can lose velocity by slowing its opening. Supposedly if it gets bad enough you can have compressed air left inside the reservoir but I would imagine the velocity drops off before that simply due to slowing the opening of the valve.0 -

SoreShoulder is right, Pyramydair has the C9 manual online. Google search "sheridan manual" & it should be the first thing that pops up. BTW, your ser# dates to 1973. 0
