How the heck do you clean this thing?

So I mentioned on the competition reloading forum I have a new savage 12 bvss in 223. Very happy with the gun so far.

I have a dewey coated rod and bore guide so I'm good there... the thing is, even a patch just barely big enough to cover the top of the jag using my old cut up undershirts won't go down the bore. I have to use a slotted tip- ok but not as good of a job.

Any commercial patches for .223 you use that don't bind up? I have a tipton nickle coated brass jag set.

    Use a .22 rod and patches for .22...
    T shirt material is too thick.

    You are using the small bore (1" sq.) patches? I know my Tipton brass jag set is tight with my .223 and when I go to the 6mm jag in any of my 6mm rifles it's loose with that little patch. But, I can't push a standard patch through. What I do when I want a tight patch is I cut the big bore synthetic patches in half with a knife. They go down the bore a little easier and still cover the jag.

    I use a 17 jag w/ patch on my 22 mag (same diameter as 223) rifle. Works well.

    Like sandwarrior, I trim my patches to fit the jag at hand. There is no standardization, jag diameters and patch thicknesses are all over the place.

    Yep, just trim the patch.

    use patches NOT t-shirts. A t-shirt is about as thick as 5 or 6 patches.

    The patches don't need to be super tight if you are using a good cleaner like Wipe-Out

    Well, someone resurrected an old topic.... I figured it out long ago. I got some Hoppes 22 patches. The material they are made of is rather thin. But doubling them up works just right.

    Will save the T-shirts for the larger bore guns.
