17 HMR sighting question
I have a ruger bolt action and was wondering if sighting it in a little high (1.5in to 2in) at 100 yards would give me the best all around performance for 50 to 150 yards. How much is the drop at 200 with a 17 hmr??

Hello roswellnative---That's a prety general guestion. To give you any worth while info. we would need to know muzzle velocity, and the specific bullets balistic coeficient. Your best bet, might be to pick the ammo with the best accuracy in your gun, and then call the mfg. for this info. Good Luck HAWKSHAW 0 -
i sight mine in dead center at 100yds, it dont take much to change the elevation for further or shorter distance, 0 -
Using some internet tools, 17gr bullet at 2550 fps, sighted dead on at 100yds will be .26" high at 50yds and 2.61" low at 150yds, 8.14" low at 200.
Sighted 1.5" high at 100 will be about 1" high at 50 and .36" low at 150. 200 yd impact with that would be 5.39" low0 -
The one I have is dead on from 50 to 100 yards. Shoots a little low from point blank to right at 50 yards.
All the information I have read says that a .17 HMR sighted in dead on at 100 yards will strike 8 inches low at 200 yards.
Mine shoots perty much to this rule.

Thanks all. Bently what sites have these "tools"?? And to add in some discussion I have read that a bullet "begins to fall" as soon as it leaves the barrel... I have a hard time understanding this as seems to me if the barrel has an angle greater than 0degrees the bullet will in fact rise...discuss... 0 -
Gravity pulls at a constant rate (9.8m per second squared). If the barrel is perpendicular to the pull of gravity, you are correct it would start to drop immediately. If you angle the barrel up, you create a trajectory, so you will have X amount of up movement per each increment of movement forward. Gravity will pull down, removing that little bit of up and replace it with down. Which is why you get a rainbow trajectory.
Don't forget that your vertical position at various ranges is affected by how high your sights are above your barrel.

Ditto on the height of scope above line of bore, especially if you're using some of those silly see through mounts. Bottom line, there are enough variables at play that I treat ballistic tables like I do bore sighters; a good place to start, but you really need to determine precise drop figures with various zero points using a specific load with your rifle and sight combination. That's half the fun anyway. 0 -
I sight my 17hmr in a 100yds so that the point of bullet impact is just slightly above the horizontal cross hair. I find that with my eyes not having the horizontal hair in the picture helps in picking up things like busted skeet pieces and small rodent heads. Items the size of fifty cents pieces are pretty small at 100yds even at 9x. And at 50yds differences either way there isn't all that much change. 0 -

If you don't all ready have a scope i would recommend the BSA SWEET .17 scope it has built in trajectory for bullet drop for the 17gr. and 20gr. ammo all you do is sight it in at 100 yards then when shooting closer or farther you set it to the distance and shoot. 0 -
For the muzzle velocity, I just did a search and picked the 17gr. bullet at 2250fps.
Then, I used this calculator; http://www.handloads.com/calc/index.html
You can enter the bullet dia., weight, etc. on the left to estimate the coefficient, which it places in the formula. Or, you can enter the coefficient, if known.
You need to also enter the other info, including the sight height (I used 1.5" for a scoped bolt gun).0 -
