Taurus 4" 44 Magnum, good gun?

I'm looking into purchasing a Taurus 44SS4 44 Magnum 4" pistol for backcountry bear protection and home protection.

Is this brand/model a good reliable long term dependable gun?

Of course I do plan on shooting it at least once a month at my local range/sportsmens club.

I currently have a 9mm Beretta 92 that is proving very dependable, is the Taurus as good for reliability?

    Do not get a Taurus. They are nothing to depend your life on. They have a lifetime warranty that in many cases is constantly in use, and dealing with their customer service sucks. I would advise to a good used S&W, Ruger Redhawk, or Ruger Super BlackHawk, before going to the Taurus.

    A good example of only of their brain farts is the JUDGE...pure POS that you cannot depend on.

    I had one and it gave very good service for the 5 years I owned it. Another Taurus in .38 special I owned was also very good with no problems. However, I eventually sold/traded both. The Taurus will cost you less, but in the long run a Ruger or a S&W will hold its value better and probably, but not necessarily, give you fewer problems.

    I've owned ONE Taurus revolver and it was sub-par quality. Spend the extra for a S&W model 29

    You won't regret it down the road, it will most likely only increase in value, and will remain a great functioning revolver

    Bluntly, no.

    I think the problem with Taurus isn't that it *can't* build a quality gun, its that its quality control is poor. While its clear that at least some if not most of the revolvers Taurus puts out are durable and reliable, I've heard all sorts of horror stories about out of alignment cylinders, guns falling apart, canted sights, etc, and its not clear to me, at least, to what extent Taurus has addressed these things.

    Even if Taurus is willing to fix any problems you might have, sending a gun back for repair is time-consuming, expensive, and leaves you without a functioning gun for a significant period of time. And of course, failures tend to occur when systems are under stress. . .ie at the absolute worst possible time.

    I think you'll be happier putting your money into a Smith and Wesson or Ruger revolver.

    The Smith is (in my opinion) a little nicer and smoother, though the Ruger is probably tougher, and over time will stand up to punishment with large number of high-powered reloads better.

    Even though these guns cost more, if you buy them correctly, they'll hold their value better than Taurus, and will even appreciate over time. If you look at the gun purchase as a long term investment, a few more dollars upfront won't mean much in comparison to many years of service and the cost of many thousands of rounds of .44 magnum ammunition. Also, knowing that your equipment is up to par is worth something too.

    I HAD A TAURUS ULTRA LIGHT 44 MAG

    worked great for the first 2 cylinders then it got tight , sent it back 5 week turnaround (not bad as some have had)it still got tight after a few cylinders not as bad
    but when i go to shoot i plan to shoot more then 6 rounds,
    i think the Titian was heating up. it shot good groups, i loved the lightness, but i let it go.

    I'm looking for a SW 460 now.

    PS: I'm still a Taurus fan and will buy another if a deal comes around.[:)]

    PSS: my smith 629-2 has never failed me [;)]

    I have several Taurus revolvers, 38's, 357's, 44 mags. Never a problem with any of them and I shoot them a lot. I have put hundreds of rounds through the 44, and its like new. All are stainless steel. I have had a Smith with problems and a Ruger too. Buy your Taurus and just make sure it's right before you meet your bear! Ignore the "expert" nay sayers - they never even owned one - they just like to be negative - you know the type!

    last year in a shipment from 2 different jobers i had two taurus revolvers right out of the box the cylinders would spin right or left with out lock up...that was the last time i had taurus ...i do not sell then anymore

    I must be unbelieveably lucky. I've owned about six Taurus models, and have not experienced any of the problems listed above. I also have an assortment of S&W's and Rugers. All fine weapons. I buy on the basis of what I need, not price.

    I carry a small frame .357, and would obviously bet my life on it.
