FFL (still need help)
1: I am wondering about how long the ATF will usually take to come for my interview, I sent app. in on 3/9/10. and my check was cashed last week.
2: Is there a minimum number of sales I have to make a year or month before I might get revoked.
3: I live in a small rural town bout 60 miles NW of Abilene TX. I talked to city manager and there are no coding or zoning laws, And I plan to have a home based business. Are there any ffl's here like that and if so, does anybody see any problem with me not getting approved.

The interview schedule depends solely on the work load of the compliance inspectors in your area and is unpredictable. While you do have to do some business there is no set number of sales needed to retain dealer status but I have been told that if a Type 01 FFL does not transfer at least 5 guns per year (15 during a three year licensing period) his application for renewal will not be approved. I'd get 15 transfers "In the bank" ASAP. If there are no zoning issues then get a letter stating this and have it available for the BATFE. I live in an unincorporated area of Orange County and there are no zonoing regs here, but I needed a letter stating this as a fact before my application was approved. 0 -
OK Mark, thats sound excellent, I already have sales tax permit, so I will go and get letter for code and zoning, I suspect from my city manager? 0 -
Also is there a certain "legal" name of the letter or paper that I need about zoning. I called ATF and the person I spoke with said that the ATF would call the city and verify themselves. 0 -
Don't take anything for granted, get your own zoning letter and have it in your hands when the compliance inspector arrives. If the BATFE wants to call and verify then that is just fine, but you are far better off having your own documentation rather than relying on them making the phone call. There are far too many instances of call not being made, the person who the BATFE needs to talk to having the day off, being out of the office, on vacation, out sick or just never returning the call. In each instance this adds time to your wait for approval and the sooner you get up and running the better. 0 -
OK thanks I will get it first thing in morning 0 -
+1 on what Mark said. Inspector may speak to a different person that gives a different answer. In God We Trust- everyone else, get it in writing. 0 -
I am an ffl dealer, live in a small town and live in my place of business. I suggest that you get on the gunbroker list of transferring dealers. Most of the buyers for whom I receive firearms have to travel some distance to do the paperwork and take possession of the gun so I can't charge much for the service. 0 -

That is great advice for a beginning dealer who is looking to get some transfers "In the bank". Let Gun Broker bring the customers to your door and you can handle their transfers while racking up good numbers to show the BATFE and justify your license, with no outlay of your own cash for inventory. Once you get settled in and have your business up and running you will have a good customer base already built up from Gun Broker transfers and with luck these guys will be buying all of their guns from you.0 -
OTH, by the nature of your business, you will have folks you don't really know coming to your home. You want to assess your family situation, & make sure that you aren't going to expose them to possible harm.
